Floyd Carroll

If you own a home, there are a lot of things you need to take care of. Home maintenance is a lot of work, and on top of it there are many things to you need to watch for to make sure your home is in good condition. One thing that you should constantly be on the lookout for is mold. Mold may seem like a simple and nonthreatening problem, but if it goes undetected and untreated, it could become a massive problem. Here are some things you need to know about mold.

What Causes Mold?

Mold thrives on moisture, heat, and darkness.  This is why it can be so hard to find. You generally won't see mold growing out in the open in the middle of your house. If this is the case, the problem has become severe, meaning that there is mold in many areas that you can't see.

Mold generally starts growing under the sink, in the bathroom, between the walls, under the carpet and in other places that are hidden. Usually the mold will start if there is a leak of any sort or if there has been a flood. This is why you should be looking for areas that are out of sight and that tend to be moist.

How Do You Know You Have Mold In Your House?

Knowing that you have mold can be hard. Because it is hard to see it can go a long time undetected. Luckily, there are some signs you should be looking for. One of the first things you will notice is a smell. It will start out as a mildew smell that is faint. Then over time it will become a rancid smell, making it hard to breathe when you are around it. You might also notice that people in the house are having breathing problems. Symptoms of mold exposure can mimic or cause asthma and allergic reactions. The individuals in the house might notice that their eyes are watering, it is hard to breathe, they are sneezing a lot and their skin is flaring up. If you notice any of these problems, you should contact professionals to look and test for mold.

What Should You Do If You Have Mold?

As a general rule, you shouldn't try to treat the mold on your own. Instead, you need to contact a professional mold remediation company. The mold could become toxic and could endanger the people in the home if it is not properly treated. That is why you need to call for professionals to get rid of it.

By understanding these things, you can know how to handle mold in your home.
