Summer Is Here: 3 Steps You Should Take To Get Your Furnace Ready For Winter

Floyd Carroll

Summer is in full swing. Your furnace is probably the last thing on your mind. However, if you want it to be up and ready when winter returns, this is the perfect time to be thinking about your furnace. In fact, it's the perfect time to be servicing your furnace. Taking care of your furnace during the summer will ensure that it's ready to keep you warm as soon as the cooler temperatures arrive. Here are three steps you can take during the summer to get your furnace ready for winter.

Schedule a Service Call

To keep your furnace running smoothly, you should arrange a professional service call once a year. Scheduling it during the summer will ensure that your service technician isn't booked with emergency repairs – which can happen if you wait until winter. Taking care of the service call during the summer will also allow your service tech the opportunity to find and repair problems that might cause your system to malfunction when you fire it up this winter.

Change the Filters

You might think that you don't need to change the furnace filter if you're not using the heater. However, if you have a forced-air system, your filter pulls double duty by working for your heater and your air conditioner. If you don't change the filter, dirt can clog the blower compartment, which will make your furnace have to work even harder to get warm air through to your house. For best results, you should change your filter at the start of each new season. This will ensure that your filter gets changed at least once every three months.

Clean the Ducts

If you can't remember the last time you had your ducts cleaned, it's probably a good idea to take care of that now. Like the blower compartment, your ducts can fill up with dirt. However, they can also fill up with other things too, including dead skin and even your own hair. To keep your furnace working properly, and to keep your family from breathing in dirt particles, you should have your ducts cleaned as part of the routine maintenance you perform on your furnace.

Now that summer is here, you should get your furnace ready for winter. Taking care of the furnace during the summer will ensure that it's ready to go when the seasons change. For other helpful tips on how to care for your furnace, be sure to speak to a service such as Dale's Heating & Appliance.
