Turning the Thermostat Too High to Try to Heat a Room Faster

Many people mistakenly believe that cranking up the thermostat will help a cool room heat up faster. In reality, your heater will heat your room at the same speed as it would if the thermostat was just slightly adjusted. When you turn up the thermostat by several degrees all you do is make your heater run longer and work harder, which equals a higher energy cost. 

Running the Heater when No One is Home

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is letting the heater run during the winter when no one is at home. In addition to using more energy, heating an empty house also causes unnecessary wear and tear on your heater. Luckily, you don't have to walk into a chilly house after a long day-- just purchase a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat will allow you to set your heater to a lower temperature when no one is home and then have the temperature increase shortly before you arrive so the house isn't cold. 

Turning the Heater Off at Night

A lot of people think that turning the heater off or drastically lowering the temperature on the thermostat will save them money on their heating bill. In reality, this tactic may end up making heating bills higher. If the temperature inside a house drops dramatically while everyone is sleeping, the heater will just have to run longer and work harder to bring the house back up to a comfortable temperature. It's not a bad idea to turn down the thermostat by a few degrees when everyone is warm in bed, but avoid turning off the heater completely or setting the temperature extremely low.

Neglecting Regular Maintenance

A heater can't be as energy-efficient as possible if it is not properly maintained and tuned-up. In addition to saving money on heating bills, regular maintenance can also help extend the lifespan of your heater.
