Do Some Spring-Cleaning: Getting Your A/C In Shape

Floyd Carroll

Your air conditioner is an appliance made for convenience and comfort. On an extremely hot day, an air conditioner can cool you off and provide you with the utmost comfort at the touch of a button. To keep your air conditioner running and in shape, you need to do some maintenance on it. Before the warm weather hits, you should do a little spring-cleaning on your appliance. Read on for a few spring-cleaning tips.

Remove Debris

Remove debris from inside of the unit. The unit may have accumulated with debris throughout the fall and winter seasons with things such as leaves, twigs, and other debris. If you have any of this debris inside the unit, you'll need to remove the lid to the unit, opening it up carefully, then reach inside to remove the debris that has built up. If it's really dirty, or you notice any nests inside the unit, use a garden hose to spray down the inside of the unit. Pay attention when spraying so that you don't spray the motor.

Clean Up Rubbish

Clean up rubbish that may have been stored for winter around the unit. Rubbish such as wood piles, leaves, or other debris should all be removed. If you have grass that has grown in too closely to the unit, or other landscaping that has grown in too close, should all be removed. You need to have at least a foot of clearance around your unit to ensure proper air flow to the unit. You should keep an eye out for overgrown landscaping throughout the entire warm weather season as well, as this overgrowth can disrupt air flow.

Clean The Air Filter

The air filter should be cleaned whether you are using your furnace or your air conditioner. It's an important part of your HVAC system. This air filter traps allergens in the filter and prevents these allergens from getting blown around your home. A buildup of allergens can cause issues for people in your home that have breathing problems or other issues such as allergies. If your air filter is clogged, it isn't going to trap the allergens like it's supposed to. Replace your air filter every other month, or sooner if you have pets that shed and carry dander.

If spring is near, it's time to do a little spring-cleaning with your air conditioner and HVAC system. Call a professional HVAC technician to check your system and ensure it is in shape for the warm weather months. For more information on AC repair in your area, contact your local professionals.
