Frequently Asked Questions About Air Conditioner Filters

Floyd Carroll

Every air conditioning unit has anywhere from one to three filters inside of it. The filters play an important role. As air is sucked into the air conditioning unit, it passes through the filter. The filter helps to trap dirt, dust, debris, and dander. This helps to ensure the inside of your air conditioner does not become dusty and dirty, while also helping to clean the air that is blown into your home. If you are not all that familiar with air conditioner filters, you may have some questions about them. Here are a few of the questions you may have about air conditioner filters.

How Often Does an Air Conditioner Filter Need to Be Replaced?

It is recommended that the filter in an air conditioning unit be replaced every three to six months. In addition to this, your filter may need to be replaced sooner if your unit is showing signs that the filter is full. If your air conditioning unit is running longer than it normally does or is not cooling the air in your home sufficiently, the first thing you should do is attempt to replace the filter. When the filter becomes full, it is harder for air to come through the clogged filter and into the unit, causing both of those issues.

Does Size Matter When It Comes to the Filter?

When you replace the filter, it is important to use the right filter size for your air conditioning unit. Check your owner's manual to determine what size you need. Unfortunately, many people think that they can use a size that is one or two inches smaller in width or length if they are having trouble finding the size they need. Unfortunately, this allows dirt and dust to slip through the uncovered edges, leading to dirt and dust build up in your air conditioner and dirty air flowing through your home. Always select the right size filter for your unit to prevent this issue.

Are Expensive Filters Better?

Expensive filters are not always better. Generally speaking, expensive filters are not always better. More expensive filters tend to have a higher MERV rating, meaning they filter out smaller particles of dirt or dust. However, the higher the MERV rating, the harder and longer your air conditioner has to work to pull air through the filter. Unless you have someone in your home with a breathing condition or severe allergies, a filter with MERV ratings of anywhere from one to four is sufficient for the average household.

Failing to change the air conditioning filter in a timely manner or with the correct size of filter can cause your unit to need to be repaired. If your air conditioning unit is not cooling your home as quickly or efficiently as it should, it may be time to have your unit inspected, cleaned and/or repaired.
