3 Important Ways To Treat Your Furnace Right

Floyd Carroll

Your furnace helps keep your home warm and cozy throughout the winter if you take proper care of it. You want to take care of your furnace before any issues develop with your furnace. It is a complicated piece of equipment, just like a vehicle, and it needs maintenance before it breaks down.

Clean the Filter

One of the most basic things you can do to take care of your furnace is to keep the filter clean. You should have a regular schedule for changing out the filter in your furnace or for cleaning the filter if you have a filter that can be cleaned.

The filter does more than remove dirt and dust from the air. The filter helps keep contaminants out of the intricate parts of your furnace.

When the filter gets too clogged though, not enough air will be pulled into your furnace, which can cause your furnace to not perform as it should.

Check the Ducts

Next, you need to make sure that your vents and home are properly sealed. If you have any damage to your vents, such as a hole in your vents, the air is not going to flow correctly through your vents, and extra strain can be damaging to your furnace. This can be prevented by having someone check your vents and duct system each year, making sure everything is well sealed and properly working. If there is any issue with your duct system, then you can have a professional take care of it. Keeping your duct system properly functioning will prevent larger issues with your furnace.

Seal Up Your House

You also need to make sure your entire home is well-sealed. For example, check and make sure that the weather stripping around your doors is keeping the air out. Make sure your windows are well sealed. All of those little spaces around your home can allow heat to escape and can tax your furnace. Many HVAC contractors will do an assessment of your home, and let you know ways you are losing energy and how to fix those leaks. Or, you can have the assessment team fix those issues for you.

Taking care of your furnace is actually a really straightforward process. You don't even have to do it alone. You can hire an HVAC professional to change your air filter, check the conditions of your ducts, and make sure your home is properly sealed.  Contact a Carrier furnace supplier for more tips on how to care for your furnace.
