How To Replace A Home Heater: Finding A Trane Dealer, Choosing An HVAC System, And More

Floyd Carroll

Does your home need a new furnace? From finding a Trane dealer to scheduling the installation, take a look at some steps homeowners need to know about heating system replacement.

Find An HVAC Dealer

Do you already have an HVAC brand, such as Trane, in mind? If you know which type of heater you want, visit the company's website or contact the manufacturer directly to find an authorized dealer. Even though there are more than a few HVAC contractors in your area, every company is not an authorized dealer. An authorized dealer has a recognized relationship with the brand.

Manufacturers choose to authorize HVAC companies that meet rigorous standards, commit to extra training, and have the expertise to sell and service their heating products. Along with a high level of new product and installation types of knowledge, authorized dealers are qualified to repair the systems they sell. Non-authorized dealers won't qualify for warranty-related repair and replacement payments. This means if you don't choose an authorized dealer, the manufacturer won't need to honor a warranty.

Choose An HVAC Dealer

After you find authorized HVAC dealers in your area, it's time to take the next step and choose a contractor. Most cities or regions have more than one authorized Trane dealer or similar manufacturer-authorized HVAC dealers. Before you agree to an estimate or schedule an installation appointment, consult with a few different contractors.

You already know that the dealer has the manufacturer's confidence. But what else do you need to know before you select one company to work with? While it's tempting to select the dealer with the lowest quote, price isn't a reliable measure of an HVAC contractor. You should feel comfortable with the contractor's knowledge and overall reliability. Ask your friends, family members, or neighbors for references.

Select A New Heater

You've found a contractor that sells the heaters you want, has the manufacturer's authorization, and meets your standards. What is the next step? Now that you have an HVAC company to work with, you're ready to select a new heater. The contractor should assess your home's heating needs and review the available options.

If you're not sure what to look for in a new home heater, talk to the contractor about energy efficiency, lifespan/durability, and the quality of each product. After you choose a new system, schedule an appointment for installation. Never attempt a DIY heater installation. Not only could this pose a serious safety hazard, it could also void the manufacturer's warranty.
